Golden Porridge (feat. Rooted Spices’ Golden Blend!)

It’s widely-acknowledged that turmeric is steeped in health-giving properties, but it’s not always an easy spice to cook with. Poor quality turmeric can be astringent and overly bitter. It might just about behave in a curry, but when large quantities of turmeric are used in health food adaptations (think turmeric latte, turmeric smoothie etc) it can be pretty bitter and, well, hard to swallow!

It’s part of the reason why we created a Golden Blend. Our Indian Turmeric is so peppery and bright. It’s balanced with Sri Lankan Cinnamon for sweetness and a tiny kick from ground peppercorns. We’re particularly proud of the Golden Blend for being awarded a prestigious star in The Great Taste Awards too.

It’s a real treat to cook with (add a dash to a carrot cake or muffin mixes and you won’t regret it!) but our favourite way with Golden Blend is to stir a little into porridge. This Golden Porridge recipe couldn’t be easier, it’s super-healthy and will really help you attack the day. ‘Baby Spice’ also started weaning with a Golden Porridge and has continued to devour bowlfuls – so it’s a great way to introduce new flavours to a toddler’s diet too.

Ingredients

75g jumbo porridge oats
450ml milk
50g sultanas
2/3 tsp Golden Blend

Method

Tip the porridge oats and milk and sultanas into a saucepan and bring to a gentle simmer.
Turn down the hob and cook on a medium-low heat for 5 minutes, stirring, until the porridge reaches a thick and creamy consistency. (If it becomes too thick, then add a splash more milk to loosen.) Stir in the Golden Blend and serve. (Note the 2/3tsp of Golden Blend just a guide – add more or less, based on personal preference).

NB I like to add a drizzle of honey. I also prepare batches of ‘seed mix’, which I toast in a dry pan, while the porridge cooks, and serve as a garnish. It’s a mix of sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, linseed and chopped hazelnuts.
